MY PHILOSOPHY

As a naturopathic physician, my goal is to empower my patients to take charge of their own wellness by providing sustainable health plans. You can think of me as your personal detective finding out what is the root cause of the “dis-ease” by utilizing natural therapies and the body’s own natural ability to heal itself. I also believe strongly in a doctor - patient relationship where we work together to achieve your health vision and your road to success.

My passion is rooted in whole foods and nutrition. I work with my patients to create new lifestyles and relationships with food by a thorough examination of the foundations of health. The healing journey can be compared to an onion with many, many layers. As we work together, these physical, emotional and energetic layers will begin to peel off.  This work requires a commitment from the doctor and physician.

WHY DID I WANT TO BE A DOCTOR ANYWAY?

I think this is the question I get asked the most. Well I’ll try to keep this story brief but bare with me. I grew up with a Mother who has always had a deep passion for health and this created roots with in me at an early age. One of my first childhood memories, is of being in the kitchen standing at the stove on a stool. I of course had to have my doll with me and she burned her arm. We quickly created a cloth bandage and sewed her right up. So I think this is where the passion for food and medicine first began.

I lived an alternative childhood eating healthy foods, doing yoga, attending a progressive montessori school and living in the woods on the beach. I moved around a ton and that’s where I got the travel bug - my suitcase is always ready for the next trip.

I attended The University of Georgia in Athens where I studied Interior Design which I soon learned art was my passion but not interiors so I decided to dive into the world of healing foods. I moved to New York and worked as a pastry chef at - oh boy do I make a mean chocolate chip cookie! It didn’t take me long to learn that I loved cooking but NYC was not for me. I packed my suitcase and headed to California where lived and worked as a whole foods chef at the Expanding Light Retreat Center. I rekindled my passion for yoga and became a yoga teacher too!

I decided I need to start my own business as a whole foods chef so I moved to SF where I had my own catering company, Meals to Heal, cute huh! I also had a vegan wholesale bakery and sold my goods around the bay area. After 9-11 I high tailed it out of the big city and moved to the mountains where I met my wonderful husband of 8 years, Dave.

We moved around quite a lot and eventually settled in Bend, Oregon where I was practicing and teaching massage. I felt like my practice was missing something and I wanted to help my patients at a new level. I had heard about Bastyr University a while before and when I looked up the Naturopathic Doctoral program I knew it was for me!

After finishing medical school, our family decided to move to Asheville, North Carolina. I knew that naturopathic medicine was much needed in the south east ~ so here we are! I couldn’t have made this journey without the love and support of my family  - thank you!

Come in and visit so we can chat more and get to know each other.

See you soon!

Your partner in health,

Dr. LuLu Hetzler Shimek, ND, LMT

The art of healing comes from nature not from the physician. Therefore the physician must start from nature, with an open mind.
